Stop Email Tracking

Per day, If I'm not mistaken I receive many emails.

At work, easily it exceeds several hundreds. Majority of them are notifications from the services, bots and many systems that send me emails upon specific actions. A lot of them also need my direct attentions, such as team members, tickets on issue tracker, deployment results etc..

Like many other "getting things done" human like robots, I have my way of dealing with all of them.

I don't have a single problem with them.

Then, I have those emails that I absolutely hate. The emails that have trackers in them.

What email trackers do ?

They track you when the email gets delivered, opened, clicked on any link.

Majority of such emails are from business people and companies that love "metrics". They simply send me an email, asking me to see if I'm interested in their products or want to buy or invest in a product from us.

You see, I grow up in internet, I live and breath in this place and as much I hate every single click of mine being tracked, spied on, a profile being created about me, but I hate it when my simple interaction with the letter which is in my own "box" is being tracked. (Yes, email providers and intelligence agency have their fun with it already.)

Let me have my privacy when I open your email. I may not want to read it now, I may just click on it out of curiosity and I don't want you to know that I clicked on it via the unique ID in the images URLs.

I don't want you to know when I open the envelope when via the unique ID you have used in all the images in your message. Sometimes your innocent "text only" looking email has a zero pixel image in it that lets you server know when I open it.

I know you have setup automated rules on your email sender to send the same email to me after a while if I have not opened or clicked on any link.

Do you like me to send letter to you via post and include a GPS tracker and another device in the envelope to alert me where you are and when you open my letter ? I may just add a microphone in while I'm at it.

Do you like that ? Do you like people invade and double penetrate your privacy? I'm sure you don't!

You're not that successful, here's how I try to keep you out:

I have my email client to show me text version of your email when possible (I can pipe emails to html2text for a very beautiful text only of your HTML only email).

I disable any remote content on any email, unless explicitly allowed, it saves bandwidth and a little more of my privacy.

Myths of Email

I don't click on URLs just because they're blue and clickable, I simply search (via DuckDuckGo.com <3) for your brand or product.

I will make sure to report you as spam.

Next time asking me you want to connect and discuss a "opportunity" via email, don't put click tracking and open tracking on your disgusting email.

ps: In GoNevis.com any email providers we used by default had this feature enabled, although it was interesting for our metrics to know them, but we simply turn them off.
